Six Months!

El Pequeño, you're six big months old today! I can hardly believe it. It seems like just a few weeks ago that you slipped out of me like an enormous tadpole. On your birthday you were 20.5 inches long and 8.5 pounds.

Now you're 26.5 inches long, and around 18.5 pounds. And most of it's muscle. You are strong! If you don't want me to hold you, you twist and stiffen up to hurl yourself out of my arms, and I can barely hold onto you anymore. You aren't crawling yet, but you're completely mobile. Between rolling and scooting, you can go anywhere you want to go.

And where you want to go is toward your brother's toys. You love the little stuffed cat you picked out in the store, but you love your brother's trucks and cars and trains, too. Especially Scoop. I wonder if you were programmed in utero to like Bob the Builder. When you get really upset, the thing that calms you down instantly is the Bob the Builder theme song. Your brother sang it to you so many times when you were tiny that it makes you smile after only a few notes now. Your other favorite songs seem to be "Three Little Birds" and the music from the Wallace and Gromit movies.

You are quite the conversationalist. You like to talk and listen to me, your brother, and your dad. Sometimes you really want to tell us something you're thinking, but other times you want us to say things that will make you laugh. You like to keep up a running commentary while you're nursing. "Mmmm! uuuhhhhr! uh-uh-uh!" I don't know what it means, but you're determined to tell me. And if I don't nurse you exactly when you want to be nursed, you really won't let it drop. You recriminate me again and again while nursing until I apologize.

It amazes me how much you understand. You recognize the names of your brother and his friends and their mothers. You really seem to understand most of what I tell you and ask you. I'm sure once your mouth muscles can make the words they'll all come tumbling out.

Have I mentioned your magic feet? I don't think I've ever met a kid who kicked as much as you do! You'd kick all day long if you could, and all night, too. And when you get in the tub--watch out! You look down at your feet and kick as if it's your full-time job.

You love the litle silver bell with the loop handle. You grab it and hold on to it and shake shake shake shake it to ring it. It's way more fun than any of the rattles you have.

You are so happy, almost all the time. Even when you're cranky there's an undercurrent of pleasantness to it. One of our friends described you as "giddy," and she's right on target. It's as if you're just waiting to laugh at the next thing. Everywhere we go you get attention. People are always surprised at how happy you are, and how beautiful, and how much you want to connect with everyone. They comment on your eyes, but mostly on your mouth. "Those lips are made for kissing!" someone says to you at least twice a week.

I am so lucky to have been your mother for these first 6 months. I know we'll have just as much fun in the next 6 months, and the rest of your life. I love you, sweet monkey!
