how weird! and i thought we were nuts down here for eating dandelion greens and other assorted greens that might grow by the side of the road.

not that i've done that in many years.

the cake sounds delightful, i have made note of the recipe. i thank you.

i can probably find frozen rhubarb. maybe? i'll have to investigate and report back, cap'n.

I remember when I was young my neighbor had rhubarb growing behind his garage.

Thanks for the strawberry tip because thats immediately what came to my mind, we have been going thru a big strawberry thing in my home.

Brooklyn Mama

Ooh, yum! I'm going to try this one. I'm a sucker for rhubarb.

Thanks for the recipe. Not too sure about the rhubarb, but mango/papaya/pineapple would probably be good.

I'm just glad to find something I can eat, what with having to eliminate everything with dairy proteins in it due to my son's sensitivity. So I'll forgive you for mentioning ICE CREAM. (And no, I can't have soy milk ice cream beacause *I'm* allergic to soy milk.)

I am not kidding you-- we are having the "stewed rhubarb" tonight for dessert!! I make some custard to serve on top of the rhubarb, but just getting ice cream sounds a fat lot easier... I love it too, and agree that strawberries merely take away from its rhubarbness. I started eating rhubarb this way while living in Dublin, so it's not just a midwestern thing!! Mm. Hungry now.

Moxie, I think I'm a first time poster here, but have been reading your blog for a while. Love it! My best wishes to you for a smooth remainder of your pregnancy, and healthy safe delivery!

OK, now for the important part! My mouth is watering over the rhubarb coffee cake recipe. I'm from Michigan, and my grandmother used to grow rhubarb behind her garage for as long as I can remember (she passed away 12 years ago). And she made the BEST rhubarb pies...I haven't had one in years, but I can still smell and taste it now.

I have the recipe for her pies, but haven't tried it yet. I think I may just have to dig it out. And while I'm at it, I'll have to try your coffee cake as well.

A big DITTO on the "rhubarb is nirvana" comment. Oh my, heaven on earth, I tell you!

I thought Rhubarb was an English thing.

Rhubarb and apple pie. MMMMMMMM.

the garage-rhubarb connection is freaking me right out.

Tracy (Terelina)

mmmmm, this looks so good. though it's the blueberry/almond mix that is tempting right now. If I can find blueberries that aren't a million dollars/pint, that is.

We used to grow it in our family garden in Wyoming. As kids we would grab a salt shaker, pull off a stalk, wash it under the faucet on the side of the house and salt and suck on that thing for hours. It would also double as our ladies' fans. Sour as hell but truly satisfying.

Wow. Thanks for the memory, I had forgotten. And the recipe is now saved by me cause yum and easy!

Thanks for sharing that recipe, Moxie. It sounds delish, and I can't wait to try it!

Hey there! Thanks for the rhubarb recipe ... and where are you?! Been thinking of you and just want to make sure you're doing well.

Lisa V

I love rhubarb! I can't wait to try this.

Wow. That was really good. I laughed when you wrote that part about the garage b/c that's exactly where our three plants are! :) And I'm always looking for more ways to use rhubarb, so thanks!

Delurking to say I can see my rhubarb patch from the window and I love watching those stalks grow! Funny how the nippy Scottish weather doesn't make any difference to it.

I am a reformed diabetic now but as a kid, we used to dip the stalks in sugar and suck. Hmm, wonder why I am diabetic now??

Looks yummy! I think it's been 2 years since I did anything with it.

I am always a little wigged out by the fact that the rhubarb stalks are edible but the leaves are poisonous. But hey, everyone else is doing it.

I just scored myself some luscious rhubarb by going to someone's door and asking if I could pick some from their yard - they had 5 gorgeous plants they obviously were ignoring. What a treat!! My father always had rhubarb (he was from West Virginia and we live in Washington State - NOT just a Midwest or English thing!!). I am going to try your recipe in muffin papers - thanks so much for sharing!!

The rhubarb coffee cake is in the oven baking now, I will let you know how it taste.

My mother grew rhubarb by the side of the garage. The plant is still there and my Dad is bringing me some tonight. I'll be trying this recipe with it. My favorite pie is rhubarb. My mother made her own crust crust and it was fabulous. And she made a cinnamon and sugar "empanada" with the leftover pie dough. It was nearly as good as the rhubarb pie. Thanks for the recipe and for bringing back the memories.

Healthy dish
